I, myself, always use it on just one side of the gasket..usually, the side that is removable. EG, when putting valve covers on..only use it on the gasket to cover, but not on the block...in your case, just on the lift cover side and not on the pump case/chassis. Of course, this is preference..I have always heard a gasket doesn't need anything to seal, but the gasket itself..I like throwing a little on there to hold the gasket in place until I get it positioned. I think the main thing is to make sure the mating surfaces are clean and you shouldn't have a problem.
