All it took was a few seconds of up close personal contact with Jenkins while he was at the race track or in his shop to know the answer to that. He didn't have much time for small talk, or idle chatter. He was all business. Most fans didn't know a lot about him, but Jenkins was an EXTREMELY well educated man. He rceieved an engineering degree from Cornell University. He applied that education and innovative mind to stay a couple steps ahead of his competition. At one point in the early '70's, Jenkins was considered to be one of the highest paid "athletes" in all of sports. He achieved that lofty status with a number of major wins, but most of his earnings came from a novel idea at the time, doing endorsements. Quite an accomplishment from the 5'-4" pudgy bald cigar chomping "grump"!
I had the pleasure of knowing Jenkins as well as long time Super Stock/Pro Stock wizzard Bob Glidden. (Who was the exact polar opposite of Jenkins...VERY outgoing and open) Not many people I've ever met were capable of outworking OR out thinking those two.
