Years ago I too would by non OEM filters to "save" some money. Then I started to see some of the problems we would get in the shops I was working at from cheap/wrong filters.
As to your friend. He is screwed. NAPA is not going to do a thing. It was the stores fault by not checking what they where doing more closely. I really doubt that they will cover a high dollar repair bill over a few oil filters.
Last I heard, Fleetguard was making most, if not all of CIH's oil filters. I was also told by a dealer that the only difference was the outer paper with the logos on elements and the paint on the outer shell of spin-ons. If that's true, it's not exactly worth 2X the price of a regular Fleetguard for that kind of piece of mind in my book.
Who, if anyone, would cover damage from a OEM dealer screwing up and getting you the wrong filter. A good dealer (aftermarket or OEM) would step up and cover (at least part of) this if it was entirely thier error. Unfortunately, most businesses now have statements on their receipts stating something like: "any liability is solely limited to the dollar amount of the parts sold". This means that they either have little or no faith in the quality of product they are selling and/or little or no faith in the people that are behind the counter selling those products for them.
There's warranties from most filter manufacturers covering damage caused by their filters, but maybe not if the wrong filter is used.
