While some vehicles are based on the same chassis, another reason to classify a truck as a truck, a something as a something is the fact that all car makers have to average a certain number of mpg (as per government), but have leeway within their different types and classes, as long as it all works out in the end. So by calling a certain vehicle a truck, or SUV, they can fudge. Another reason is the psyche of the buyer pool, a guy definitely feels more manly/macho driving a "truck", while a lady might feel more pulled to purchase a "SUV" ..... anyone remember the full size conversion vans ...... the mini van craze (station wagons were a piece of the past, though coming back today...)
