Growing up in eastern Colorado in the sixties and seventies, no one would call a pickup a "truck". Of course 1 ton trucks and "duallies" were pretty rare. It wasn't until I entered college and was exposed to "easterners" (anyone from Chicago east was an easterner) that I heard the word "truck" used to describe a pickup. It used to crack me up when my buddy from Chicago would describe his Datsun pickup as a "truck".
I live among the "easterners" these days, and I still insist on calling a pickup a pickup. Sometimes I'll refer to someone's pickup truck as their "car", just to aggravate them.
