Somewhere on the drum their will be an API rating the gas rating will be S_, (S followed by a letter), the later in the alphabet the letter is the newer the oil rating is. SA is the old non-detergent oil, SB is something from the late 50's early 60's. SF was the current grade when I was in college, new oil is I think SJ. Their may be another rating that will start with a C and have another letter like CC or CD, these indicates the diesel or commercial(C) rating for the oil. These are American Petroleum Institute ratings (API) identifying the oil's performance as a lubricant. Compare the drum's ratings to what you engine requires. If the oil is equal to or greater it should be okay.
