On the real late model stuff you can wipe out the wiring harness/controller if you just hook in the brake light wire like the old trucks did. The newer stuff uses CAN BUS electrical systems. You need to buy a adapter harness to hook the electric brake control in and another harness to hook the trailer lights into.
My brother has a 2010 Dodge 1 ton dually diesel. He did not want to pay $500 to have the factory towing package. He wired it up like you would on the older trucks. First time he hooked to his trailer he burnt up the factory waring harness to the rear of the truck and wiped out the anti-lock brake controller. It only cost him $110 to get back to where he started and then he bought the factory harness and wired everything in.
