In this day and age you can't afford to NOT live in fear of everything. One little mistake will ruin you for life, so you can't enjoy anything, ever again.
Two words: Jim Alesi. This NY State politician tried to ruin a couple's life by suing them because he broke his leg while TRESPASSING on their property.
It was a very well-publicized case. He waited until the couple couldn't press trespassing charges anymore, then filed suit.
He had no business being there. He had no permission to be on the property. He fell off a ladder and broke his leg.
The ONLY reason he didn't go through with it is because of all the negative press he received.
He almost certainly would've won, given the history of courts awarding big settlements to anyone that hobbles into the courtroom with a good sob story and a neck brace.
If you think that doesn't go on every day all over this country, you are seriously out of touch with reality. We just don't hear about it because most of it is perpetrated by "regular folks" whom the press could care less about.
