Sounds like you have a restricted fuel supply to the carb. Being it takes that long to act up, first thing to check is the tank vent in the filler cap. When the surging starts, try removing the tank filler cap and see if you get a whoosh of air entering the tank, see if this also relieves the surging. If no plugged vent, you may have something floating in the tank, plugging the line to the carb. May need to remove the tank for a good cleaning.
