Pat - I remember digging potatoes and finding the set intact. It seemed like an oddity. I have no knowledge of what should happen - just remember the old folks mentioning that the "seed" was still there.
I have a nice potato patch this year, but they are trying to bloom and it's very dry. Hoping for a rain. We planted 50# of Kennebec and 25# of red pontiac.
What part of the country are you in? It's usually July before we dig them here in Southern Illinois, but this year is an odd one. . .
