TXJim the 55 series utility tractors where the first to have a PTO start switch. All the earlier Mannheim tractors did not have one.
We had a customer get killed when he was working on a manure spreader and his son started the tractor with the PTO engaged. The beater decapitated him. It was a real mess. I got to go with the truck driver to pickup the tractor and manure spreader. The family wanted them both gone and sold. We did it for them.
They sued JD and got a big settlement. My territory manager told us that this settlement made JD install safety start PTO switches on the utility tractors. I don't know this for sure but that is what he told us at the time. He was involved in the reporting. As a JD dealer you are required to make a report to JD as soon as you hear of anyone being seriously hurt or killed on a piece of JD equipment you have sold. In all of the years I was at JD dealers we had three fatalities to report.
