Did they blossom as well as the first batch? Was it different seed stock? Did you plant them in the same spot? If yes, could the something be depleted from the soil in that area from the first batch you grew?
It could have been moister soil and warmer weather from March - April this year, than it was from April - May. It was HOT here in March and April, and then was actually cold the end of April through much of May (we had wondered mid-May if we were going to freeze our tails off at our daughter's outdoor wedding... but it warmed up just enough to be real nice).
