I won't take credit for creative thinking, but I needed to fence across a creek bottom once and needed about 20 posts. It was late spring or so and I cut the posts out of some 6 +/- inch water maple (silver maple?) that were in the way. I set them and built the fence...... They sprouted and grew branches.. The next year, they were starting to look like trees again... FF 25+ years and they were still there when I drove by the place a couple years ago....
