Warren, I spent a little time looking at the parts diagram on the CNH website. The PTO clutch arrangement is basically the same as on my 9000 and my 8240. The whole clutch assembly rides on the PTO shaft and would spin around it if not for the locating pin that you removed. Upon removal the valve assembly would have rotated CCW a little and when you got the pin back in it most likely went in just above the arm that it is supposed to be in instead of through the hole. With the pin in the wrong place, the most likely problem is that the Hydraulic line that supplies the clutch valve got disrupted and is leaking. With the access plate off as Shaun suggested you can get the valve up to where the locating pin will go where it needs to go, but while it is off, try to check the integrity of the hyd. line going into the bottom of the valve.
