The problem could be an internal wiring problem with the motor but more than likely it is with the switch. While testing the switch I would disconnect the motor marking which wire goes where. It sounds to me like with one direction you are getting 230 volts and when you reverse the switch on leg is dead and you are only getting 120 volts. With a volt meter you can test each wire and see if you are getting power on each line. If it turns out one leg is really dead try to find a replacement switch that is the same model to make it easier to change out.
