Well Larry I would try to convince the wife to change her mind. You could not pay me enough to live in NJ or NY. I have been to both and have traveled up and down both. There are some places in up State NY that are pretty good and some in southern NJ. I think you live up in northern NJ. There I would hate every minute of living there.
Another thing to think about is what the future cost of living is going to be. The cost will be much higher in NJ to live in your retirement. I know the current Governor has cut things a bunch but there is an avalanche coming in under funded state retirements and Medicare. If they try to pay them then the taxes are going to have to go sky high.
Also look at the age demographics. I saw a report on how the north-east is aging much faster than the rest of the country. The younger people are moving south and west to get away from the high taxes. They are looking at better weather and better job opportunities. So 10-20 years from now, in the heart of your retirement years, who is going to be working to pay the taxes that need to be collected to keep things afloat???
I would be running from NJ. I am a country fellow at heart. If I can see a neighboring house it is too close.

But, I want to talk about my tractor! We didn't even own a lawnmower, and all of a sudden we had enough grass to feed all the starving children of the bovine world. Naturally, I talked
