My neighbor runs about a half dozen bison (not buffalo) along a 1/2 mile of creek with fences that aren't any different than the normal fence. He runs them in the creek only when the grazing is good and the animals are content. When the grass gets down they go to the drylot by his buildings. The drylot fences can hold in a sherman tank. In the fall he runs them in the cornstalks for a little while.
Slaughter time is another thing to consider. The small locker plants around here don't have the holding facilities to hold a bison. At my neighbor's farm when slaughter time comes the selected animals are shot and field dressed before they go to the locker plant. He has to leave and have someone else do the shooting because he becomes so attached to them. Bison have very few calving problems which is good because you can't get anywhere near them during calving or they will kill you.Jim
