It just would have been unusual for a primary runway in Iowa to be aligned essentially East/West due to the prevailing winds. Thus I concluded (guessed) the directions of the pictures. I used to fly those things....absolutely loved it. Had to quit.....the most expensive hobby I ever got into. Wow, is it ever. I had all the ratings other than flight instructor....and was working on that. I even had my own runway here on the farm. I had a 1600 ft grass strip and flew my 172 in and out of here almost daily. One day I just said to heck with it. I also liked to drink beer.....and the two didn't mix. It was cheaper and safer to just stay on the ground from then on. Now it's one of those "braggin' rights" deals. I learned how to do it and nobody can take it away from me. In retrospect, the only reason I wanted to learn how to fly was because I was absolutely terrified of flying. I wanted to get over that. And did.
