Jake, I'm not sure where you are, but if it was me, I'd dose it good with a 2-4D for thistle and broad leaves this fall, then leave it alone until spring. Hit it with a Gramoxone or Round-up dose for a burndown and notill corn into the sod, with Bicep or some season weed control. Come back when the corn is about 6" to a foot with an over the top dose of roundup for any stray weeds. Use Roundup ready seed. If your field is smooth enough for hay, there isn't any sense in trying to roughen it up and find some more stones.
