I've had both. Have shaft drive now. I never had trouble with the chain. I took the guard housing off as I didn't want it filling with dirt and wearing things out. I did hate tightening chains every so often. I never did replace a chain. When they wouldn't adjust anymore I would rotate the tensioner on the splines and keep going.
Have shaft drive now on a Polaris. I hate that machine but haven't had any shaft issues. Less to get tangled up in the brush out in the pasture.
