Have it tested. Just because an alternator has been installed does not necessarily make it 12 volts. I took a 12 volt alternator and put in a 6 volt regulator. There is no external evidence on the alternator to indicate this. By having it tested at your local parts house will tell right away when it puts out it's regulated voltage. I hope this helps.
