Wife says that a lot of the land and equipment belonged to the state (??) and the folks were paid to work it... You wouldn't believe how much wide open land (forest and farmland and just unused land). Don't know how it worked, but a lot of folks became landowners/leasers quick.... I was just in the former DDR (East Germany) near my area last weekend. Some big and nice farms.....
