I'd go for the 20ga, if it handles well first for the fact that it is less of a load of shot. Keep in mind that you have a dissadvantage as a homeowner in self defence. you have to worry where the bullet/shot goes if you miss. A prolwer/thief doesent care if he hits your wife or kids if he misses you. I'd even consider the Taurus Judge and now the S&W Public Defender mentioned below. buckshot looses a lot of it's velosity going through drywall, so it's safer for the other victims in the house. getting outside of the house changes the equation completely. then it's the 12 ga and 00buck or slugs. you have to decide where you will most likley face the threat.
