From experience, a bad guy will run from the sound a pump shotgun makes chambering a round. And that was a Rem, trap and skeet grade, 870, .410.....that was empty (I was young, had just used the last of my ammo that day, A mistake I will not let happen again). All I heard after that was "OH S***!" and someone running. The whole key to a home defence weapon is to have to never use it! Everyone knows what a pump gun sounds like when the action is worked. Short of waking to find a bad guy standing by your bed that noise may sve you from having to shoot someone. You still have to be ready if needed to shoot but it's much better for everyone involved if you don't.
Now I have a couple of dogs that sleep inside. They would wake me long before a bad guy could get to my bed.
