Yes, the cutout is no longer needed and can be eliminated. The link below takes you to a good, simple, easy to understand wiring diagram and parts list.
I perfer using a charge light rather than a diode. The charge light serves as an indicator that 1 your alternator field circuit is working,2 your alternator is / is not charging,3 you forgot to turn off the ignition and will run down your battery.
Also, the indicator light serves as a current limiter and restricts the alternator excite load on the ignition circuit to aprox 1/4 amp, while using a diode will not limit current and will allow the alternator field to draw 3-4 amps, nearly doubling the amp load on the ignition circuit, which can cause a voltage drop and weak spark / hard starting.
