I metered my electric hot water separately for many years. When it was just two of us (LP heat, no AC) it was 40 percent of our total usage. After two kids it rose to 60 percent of the total bill. Monthly usage between 1200 and 1500 kWh. This was a rural home with a well.
BTW rural coop rates are higher but only the cost to serve. If we depended on investor owned utilities to serve rural America we would still be using candles.
