Check the local SPCA, they might've thought he was a stray. More likely he got hit and ran off, it happens.
One time a neighbor was in her driveway, opened the tailgate of her minivan and a golden retriever ran out of the nearby woods and jumped in. Natural habitat for them I suppose.
