It will not work with many older programs under Windows 7 "Home Premium" regardless of mode. If you have Windows 7 "Professional" and the correct motherboard - then these same programs will work in compatibility mode.
Windows 7 was mis-represented when called "Home Premium." I say that because it was cheapest stripped down version available and there is nothing "premium" about it. With Windows XP (home version) and Vista (home basic) - compatibility mode WOULD work with the program in question.
If you go to the Microsoft Website they explain the extra-cost version of Windows and special hardware needed to run many older programs.
