Some of my best memories of my dad are the many times we went out on a November or December day, following his two pointers. It was always a bit amazing and funny how startling it was when that covey flushed up in front of those dogs: you knew the birds were there and you knew what they were going to do, but they still almost produced a heart attack. As I type this I'm looking at my dad's "bird gun"---a sawed-off 12 ga. Savage, Browning patent, WWII military surplus. I've seen him get as many as four birds on one covey rise with that gun.
But, no more of that for me---I haven't heard a bobwhite whistle around here for 30 years or more. Fire ants and coyotes have killed off all ground-nesting birds.

While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity".
