The ford V6 is 2 banks of 3, that face opposite directions. Resulting in 2 timing chains and 2 sets of chain guides. The guides are plastic composite material, which wear quite easily. Go onto youtube and search for 'ford explorer timing chain', there is a number of clips with examples of what they sound like when warm.
I had an explorer in Germany and it had the same sort of noise, and did a lot of research, the motor has to come out to do both sets of chains and guides...
