Not sure what and where you are going to be hunting. If deer, will it be woods hunting, open field hunting or both?
The .243 will work for deer as will the 7mm/08 and .308.
For coyotes, other varmints, there's never been a better than the 22/250 cartridge.
Are you going to reload? Buying ammo can get expensive.
The Savage Axis is Savage's "economy" rifle. It's not at all up to the regular Savage line of great rifles. But-its been proven many times over that a "free floating" barrel gives much better accuracy than a fully bedded barrel.
Where I hunt for deer, I like a 45/70 or the tried and true 30/30 for the woods. If I'm going to be hunting the fringes and have some chances for shots at a distance, I like my sporterized 6.5x55 Swede or my .308.
