Years ago, the government was condeming potatoes and splashing them with die to prevent them from being sold. We had a large cast metal bowl with a gas powered burner underneath. Dad used to cook the potatoes for feeding the hogs. One time, took 'em out too hot. One of the pig grabbed one in it's mouth - ran around in circles squelling bluddy murder - wouldn't spit it out!
Fed a lot of potatoes to the dairy cows as well. Cows would grab them in their mouths, and throw their heads upward, scattering potatoes all over the feed alley, and out of the manger. Dad suspender a heavy length of water pipe over the manger. Cows finally quit when they kept banging their heads.
Butyes, potatoes are a viable feedstuff for hogs, cows. Don't remember cooking for the cows, but sure did for the pigs.
