9mm is perfectly adequate, especially with Defense ammo.
Lot to be said for the revolver tho. No safeties to remember, no magazines to make sure are seated properly, no slides to rack, no clearing drills to practice. If it doesn't go "bang" just pull the trigger again.
I DO NOT recommend one of the little J-frame 5 shot snubbies. They're fine for someone that already knows how to shoot, not so much for a beginner. Very short sight radius, small, hard to see sights, and very light weight which means more perceived recoil.
I've been shooting revolvers, including .357 and .44 Magnum and hot .45 Colt rounds for years. I just picked up a J frame S&W for a carry piece, and I was VERY surprised at the amount of recoil and muzzle flip with just basic .38 target loads.
Something in a K frame (or Colt, Ruger, Taurus equivalent) would be a good balance of recoil-absorbing weight, decent sights and simplicity of operation.
