not mine but may be the ultimate. my mom, now 87, tells of a neighbor back in the late fifties. at Christmas mom would make a real fruit cake with candied fruit, raisins, pecans and butter or oleo margarine. our neighbor lady, who was nutty as a fruitcake made one with mother's recipe one year. one day the neighbor came to our house and asked mom if the fruitcake was supposed to be spicy hot of course the answer was no and upon further questioning, the neighbor admitted to using sausage drippings for the oleo margarine. today many, many years later mom is still with us, my wife and i now make the fruit cake and every year we laugh about the sausage drippings.
