If I saw a long gun all I ever asked was to see that it was unloaded, if that. I might ask what it was and get into a nice discussion of the merits of his choice vs mine. If it was a handgun then it had to be on his permit. If things didn't add up we might go to the station to look into it, but I did not CONFISCATE his gun for no reason other than it was "scary looking" or held a lot of cartridges. If the gun was illegal, like with a sawed off 12" barrel, or stolen, that was another thing. If the gun was questionable, like it was his wifes, on her permit and not his but in his possession, then I might hold it in evidence until she showed up to claim it, but probably not even that. We were supposed to be smart enough to recognize the difference between a criminal act and an innocent mistake that did no harm. That type of thing was done by autobots who would do things like try to write up farmers on ATVs fixing fence for not having it registered or wearing a helmet. Is that the kind of dope you want as a Trooper?
