Trees seal themselves quickly. You have to cut the end off right before you set it up and fill it immdiately.
The sap starts flowing as soon as you cut it, and it'll seal right over.
And if you let the water get below the bottom of the tree just once, it's pretty much all over for the tree. Doesn't matter what you put in there because it won't be getting much into the tree from that point on.
If you do it right, the tree should hold together well enough. Depending of course on how early you get it before christmas, and how long it's sat in a lot before you bought it.
