We have one barn that Grandpa used for milking until he quit at 75 years old. No modern milking stuff--by that point, Grandpa had been milking a couple of cows by hand exclusively for family consumption for a few decades. Neat old stanchions, though, with manure trough in the back and manger in the front. Horse stalls on the side and a big haymow and lofts all around. It was built in 1907, as near as I can tell. We probably saved it several years ago by putting on a metal roof. I finally got around to packing several loads of dirt around the foundation where the cattle had worn it away over the decades. We still use it for cattle, just not for milking.
We also have a mix of mono-roof and peaked open-front pole barns, a couple of enclosed sheds, and even a somewhat dilapidated "hog hutch" that shelter cattle during inclement weather. We built a cross-braced "roof-only" shed over the squeeze chute this year (the sides are all gates). We will build a new granary next year for the ground ear corn.
We also depend on tree lines and "lay of the land" to shelter our cattle in extreme hot and extreme cold weather.
