Success is all about making the most you can with what you have to work with. Not everyone can take 10,000 acres and a multi-million dollar operating budget and not be overwhelmed. But there are some who can take a big operation, use economy of scale to make more per cow/acre/ect, and thrive. For those who CAN make the most of what opportunities they encounter, the logical way to take it to the next level is to "go big". How big is all up to the skills (as a business man) they have, combined with work ethic, and a little bit of luck thrown in for good measure.
Got a good friend who farms a bit over 14,000 acres. He's the type who would have made a success on 14 acres, and is a raging success with his big operation.
I've seen a few "BTO's" that flopped like a fish out of water.
Likewise, seen many a small farmer fail, many do quite well. Some say luck. I say it's a form of survival of the fittest.
