You forget that when it came to the US military and the American Indians the military was armed with rifles while the Indians were often armed only with their bows and arrows other hand held weapons. It wasn't until later on in the 'wars' that the Indians got their hands on rifles and when they did it it allowed them to take on guys like Custer on an equal standing. In that case it Custers arrogance in thinking he didn't have to really try to beat the Indians because they had been beaten so easily before, that was his undoing. Unfortunately, like you said, he only lost a battle instead the war but that was because by that time the Indian population had already been so decimated and controlled by the government that they didn't stand a chance. had they been equipped with 'modern' weapons from the start I can just about guarantee the outcome of th 'war' would have been completely different.
