Oh, because they had an armed population and now they're killing off our troops one and two at a time?
First off, their weapons were Soviet era military grade weapons cast off when a poorly administered army of a defeated nation retreated, and weapons bought for them by us during the Reagan administration. The cause of this retreat was not due to guerrilla attacks by local Mujhadeen. The Soviet Union was dying and they didn't have their heart in the occupation. Before them, it was the British that had looooong supply lines and better places to go with their military.
Even with military grade weapons in the hands of civilians, we defeated them in a month.
Simply put, we've worn out our welcome. We invaded the country, nearly defeated and dislodged the Taliban, lost interest and invaded Iraq for not very good reasons, supported a corrupt leader with delusions of dictatorship, let the Taliban regain a foothold, and are now casting about figuring out how to extract ourselves from this mess.
It has nothing to do with hunting rifles in the hands of the general population.
