It was an explosive. Push it down into the end of the cigarette, far enough so it wouldn't explode until the second puff or so. Would blow the cigarette apart. Not enough to cause serious personal injury, although probably enough to get you sued today.
We did it to Roger Heinselman in high school- he was kind of a dufus, and always went a across the street for a smoke at noon. He thought it was a defect in the cigarette- "It just went Bang! Must have been an air pocket or somethin."
