Sounds like you need to take that motor off and clean it up. It doesn't turn a lot so wearing out is something usually reserved for things like school buses that are shifted 30 times a day.
Maybe ground if it is intermittent. The ones I have done (buses) have cartridge fuses. It should ground throught the mating surfaces - you may need to pull it off and take a wire brush to it. You would know if it were pulling enough to blow a fuse as it would pull so much juice for a while that the headlights would dim when you shifted it. If there is power to the back it isn't a fuse.
Find out which rear end it is and google it on line for a schematic to pull it apart. Knowing Ford my guess is that it is a Spicer rearend.
Also wiggle wires from the shifter back and see if your power goes out. The wires are easy to follow.
