My photo editing software-and probably Microsoft photo software too - has stuff for "tagging" photos, but I don"t use it (at least not yet).
My favorite way of organizing files (both pics and docs) is as such:
For pics, I put them into separate folders such as: Family 2010 Family 2011 Family 2012 or MY FAVORITE... Rusted Iron-Old Bldgs-Scenery...this folder has a sub-folder for every junkyard or old building site I have ever visited and they are labeled by name (and one junkyard that we frequent actually has five sub-sub-folders... LOL). *BUT I HAVE TO CONFESS... inside my folders and sub-folders is one hellacious mess. ROFLOL! Though before importing pics from camera I do try to rename them all by date taken and some relevant file name followed by a number in parenthis (1).
In case you don"t know... one can rename hundreds of pics in your camera by highlighting the first pic -
THEN hold down your SHIFT BUTTON
and while holding that down, ALSO depress your ARROW DOWN button.
This will select every picture on your memory card.
NEXT, just RIGHT CLICK on top of any one of your selected group -
then select RENAME and type in a new name...
your computer should automatically rename them all and assign a number after each one (because other than the assigned number the file name you typed will be the same on all those pics. EXAMPLE: grandson 1st birthday (1)...they will all be the same name but will be numbered consecutively. (Sadly, I just figured this out accidentally about a year ago. So I was previously wasting a TON of time renaming each photo individually).
Document naming example: YT - then list subject matter of saved posts/pics letter - for farm payment letter - for annual Christmas note recipe - spaghetti sauce recipe - chicken paprikash w. dumplings qutoes - name of person Farmall Regular - then name of whatever info I am saving regarding our Regular
