I drove a VW Bus in college. You couldn't kill it. It had just over 200K miles on it when I got it. The transmission was so loose you couldn't tell what gear you were in. I repaired just enough to keep it going and used it to commute 3 hours a day. The wheel bearing races were so bad up front that when you got to your destination your bowels had been vibrated into an emergency bathroom visit.
That thing is still running around the town where I sold it. I'm not sure how, but it is.
