I posed such a question (home invader getting shot....by me) to the local sheriff who gets re-elected repeatedly (including by me) for doing his job ( a great job) as he is paid to do, and the official response of the office is: "Well sir, he just shouldn't have been there".
That pretty well sums it up. Most invasions that take place during the hours that folks are usually home and asleep are with the intention of inflicting body injury upon the occupants to obtain money.
When you are confronted by someone DUMB enough to break into your house in the middle of the night, you can bet he's high on something and not in his right mind in the first place......whatever "right mind" means.
Case in point (on being high on something), the recent shooting 5 times of the guy chasing a lady and her kids to the attic, getting shot, going back down 2 flights of stars (attic access and second floor), goes out to his car, cranks it up and attempts to leave.......but was stopped by a tree.
Even though it would be a traumatic event, I'll shoot first and worry about any consequences later.
