Some claim you can carefully split a Delco Si series alternator enough to reclock it without losing a brush off the rotor sliprings. I have never been able to do that, always had to split it totally, repin the brushed and dreassemble it clocked the way you need it.
REMEMBER!!! Split it between the front aluminum case half and the steel stator ring, not between the rear half and the stator ring or you will wreck the stator leads.
Also If you need to pin the brushes and use a metal wire, MAKE SURE you remove the wire before installing and powering the alternator.
Many better quality brush sets use a nylon pin to hold the brushes. Accidently Leaving the non conductive nylon pin in place when reinstalling the alternator and powering the #1 regulator will cause no harm. With a metal pin in place, a dead short is created that will instantly destroy the regulator or inline diode.
