I'm not sure what your uncle used the big rake-like tool for, but I remember seeing something like that in a Mother Earth News magazine about 30 years ago. The article had to do with cutting hay with a scythe, and then using a huge rake like that to rake the hay into piles for subsequent transport to the barn.
It would take a much better man than I am to embark on such an endeavor.
