I think Casey is right. 966 is one of my all time favorite IH machines. It will do all you throw at it with what you have coming. I'm not sure about the clutch pack thing as the most we did PTO wise was the mixer grinder. Spend many hours on it.
That said, you would like a 1086. We traded an 856 for one and I thought I was in heaven. There's a bit more muscle than the 966 and it is a newer machine. It might be just perception, but I always thought the 966 we had was the lowest on power of our tractors.
Buying a machine that is just big enough for the job is asking for trouble. Especially if that machine is about 40 years old.
