I don't intend to hijack your thread but I will offer this up as evidence that the way we treat criminals has changed alot over the years: In "The Cattlemen", by Marie Sandoz, she tells of cattle rustlers being caught in the act of stealing cattle. How were they punished? They were beaten, and for each rustler a beef was killed and skinned. The thief was then rolled up tightly in the hide, still alive, and set out in the heat of the day. The hide would slowly shrink, suffocating the criminal. They were left to die this way, with the brand of the hide facing up as a deterrent to others. We had a local guy go to prison recently for stealing cattle in our area, but I think people would think twice about stealing if the risk of harsh punishment were higher...
