I think you miss the point (as most do) that the second amendment is not about hunting, or self defense. The second amendment was adopted in 1791 (I believe) which is just a few years after the revolutionary war. The founding fathers did not and would not have any thought as to using a firearm for self defense or for hunting as that was a way of life for each and everyone at the time. You either hunted or you starved. You either defended your home or you were scalped, period.
The real reason for the second amendment was to protect our society against tyranny of government. They were wise enough to realize that even the best government could become corrupt and oppressive. Boy, were they prophetic or what?
Also think of the wording of the second amendment: "The right to bear ARMS shall not be infringed". It doesn't say the right to bear a rifle, handgun, claymore mine or whatever. There is NO LIMIT put on the term "ARMS". At the time that document was written, the US citizen was just about as well armed as the standing army was. The reason, I believe, they didn't put a limit on what weapons a citizen could bear is so there would not be any advantage the government would have over it's citizens should the government become tyrannical.
There should be no limit on the type of gun a citizen can purchase just as there should be no limit on the type of vehicle that same citizen is allowed to have. Choice is choice. You either have the freedom to make your own or you do not have freedom.
